Publishing of an academic nature is currently undergoing some huge changes with the emergence of a transition from print to digital electronic formats. Electronic format business models are very different. Since the 1990s the licensing of electronic resources such as journals were quite common.

More recently though trends are emerging with regard to scholarly journals being freely available on the internet from the time of publication on toward the future. This open access type of publishing come in two flavors, open access publishing where all portions of the journal are freely accessible from publish date onwards, and self archiving in which the creator makes a copy of his or her work freely available on the internet.

One of the earliest research journals was the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society. This journal published during the 1800s, during an era when the very act of publishing academic debate and inquiry was very controversial as well as ridiculed. The increase in publication of academic journals helped to decrease the amount of discovery claim disagreements.

Research papers typically contain original research results or reviews of results. These kinds of papers are articles that are considered based on peer review and other referees. Many very well known academic journals typically take years of revision and re-application to have works accepted for inclusion to the journal's next publication.
